What to See in Varenna

Small fishing village, is one of those places that deserve to be visited during a trip on the Lario: narrow alleys make up the old town and suggestive stairways lead to the lakefront.

The church dedicated to San Giorgio deserves particular attention. A fourteenth-century building that preserves frescoes and paintings from the 14th-16th centuries.

Villa Monastero is undoubtedly the flagship of Varenna. Originally (XII century) female monastery currently a museum, in its 14 rooms you can admire original furniture and decorations, while in the adjacent garden there are innumerable rare botanical species and exotic.

Of another marvelous residence, Villa Cipressi, today a luxury hotel, you can admire the wonderfully jagged gardens from steps and terraces sloping down to the lake and enriched also in this case by many perennial and seasonal plant species.

Nature lovers can not miss the ‘Scanagatta’ Ornithology Museum with its large collection of birds, as well as the Vezio Castle, which dominates Varenna, reachable on foot, you can participate in falconry shows, but also enjoy a wonderful view of Lake Como and Bellagio.

Also interesting is the visit of the springs of the Fiumelatte, which with its 250 meters of length is one of the shortest rivers in Italy, but, attention, is fed only from March to October! On the lakefront, however, the beautiful promenade lined with bars, restaurants and shops leads to the walkway suspended over the lake, called ‘walk of love’.
